Welcome

Handbuilt Clay Sculpture

I have made things in clay for more than twenty years.   The images shown here represent an ever-evolving body of work.  I make art, quite simply, because I cannot imagine not doing it.
I live in the country and find inspiration, sustenance and delight in the natural world that surrounds me.  I love the subtle, complex shapes and colors of natural objects.  My work is hand built from stoneware or porcelain and sometimes incorporates other materials such as wood, metal or stone.  Each piece is finished with slips, washes, and glazes, and then fired to cone 6 or to cone ten in an electric or gas kiln.  Often a piece is fired multiple times to achieve the desired surface.  From time to time I may add oil or acrylics to achieve a final effect.   Most of my work may be safely displayed outside.
My hope is that my sculpture may offer the viewer a door to experience.   So much of life lies beyond the realm of the thinking brain.  When art works it can open the door to the realm that lies beyond words and concepts.  The experience that it gives rise to may be as simple as delight in a line, a form or a texture or it may be profoundly spiritual.  Every experience will be a unique combination of the art and the viewer.
